Happy New Year - on the St. Johns River

We are finally on our way south after a morning delay waiting for fog to lift.  Here we are anchored in Palmo Cove, 3 hours south of our Jacksonville marina.

After launching the dinghy, we go exploring in a couple of nearby creeks. 

We see occasional fish camps along the creek, but most of the terrain is swamp.











We didn't see much wildlife, but this youngster was sunning nearby.

After 2 nights anchored out we are ready for a dock and pull into Boathouse Marina in Palatka.  The town is filled with huge live oaks.

We walk a mile to see the Ravine Gardens State Park.  This suspension bridge is one of two crossing a ravine in the natural area of the park.

Paths wind for several miles in enhanced native habitat.  The park also includes formal gardens with lots of azaleas, not in bloom now.








Our lunch stop is at Angel's Dining Car, the oldest diner in Florida, in operation since 1932.  Housed in an old railcar, the interior is kitchy 50s decor.

We have enjoyed walks around the nearby North Historic District.









Houses dating between the 1870s and 1930s have been lovingly restored.

Carolyn and Boka relax on the porch of an historic home that is usually open for tours, just not this week.

New year's eve dawns with low fog hanging over the river.








And the sunrise ...

Palaka city fireworks behind our boat are reflected in the water.  Lights in the distance are on a bridge.
