The White House, Washington DC

We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Our trips behind us, we have been busy getting the boat ready for the cold weather ahead. We have managed to squeeze in some sightseeing as well.  Some attractions require advance reservations, especially tours of the White House.  We got an early start to try to secure a tour during the Christmas season to see the decorations and were rewarded with tickets for December 1st!  The decorations were lovely but there were LOTS of people!

The Wharf Holiday Boat Parade

December 2nd found us with front row seats for The Wharf's Holiday Boat Parade.  Passing mere feet past our slip at the end of our dock, we saw Parade Marshall John Glenn open the festivities.

More than 60 boats participated, stretching as far as we could see down the Potomac River.

Lots of creativity and work went into decorating boats of many sizes.

The grand finale was a spectacular fireworks show, originating too close for comfort to our dock!

Monticello with Kurt & Cindy, Charlottesville VA

One week later, our friends from Colorado, whom we met here last spring, came to town for a week-long visit.  Unfortunately they brought Colorado weather with them - our first snow of the season!  We bravely slogged through snow and cold and had a great time seeing many of the sights with them.

We made a day trip to Charlottesville to see Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home.
Mount Vernon, VA

A morning drive took us to Mount Vernon, VA, to see George Washington's home.

Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum is split between two locations, one on the National Mall and one, in suburban Virginia.  The VA location is a massive facility, built to house their extensive collection of aircraft under one roof.  As an example of the size of the exhibit space, this photo shows a Boeing 707 in front of an Air France Concorde.

"Enola Gay", the Boeing B-29 Superfortress that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima to end WWII.

US Capitol, Freedom

We spent another busy day touring the Capitol and sitting in on sessions of Congress.  Here we admire a replica of the Statue of Freedom; the original sits atop the dome of the Capitol.

US Supreme Court Building

We move across the street to tour the Supreme Court building.

Library of Congress

After a quick lunch in the Supreme Court cafeteria, we cross the street to visit the Library of Congress.  We find spectacular architecture, a recreation of Thomas Jefferson's remarkable library, an original Gutenberg Bible, and several special exhibits.

Kennedy Center

Our busy day comes to a grand finale with a performance of "An American in Paris" at the Kennedy Center.

A few more museums, some wonderful meals, and our whirlwind visit with friends Kurt & Cindy comes too soon to an end.  They are off to Breckenridge and we are back to prepping the boat for colder weather to come.

Corpus friends Tom and Sherry
A few days later we learn a friend from our Port Aransas days is in town visiting family for the holidays.  We are able to get together for a wonderful Christmas Eve sushi dinner and to catch up on mutual friends in Texas.

Christmas Day promises to be filled with new Yacht Club friends at their annual Christmas Pot Luck.  We are expecting a crowd of 50 - 75 for afternoon festivities.  We hope you are able to spend time with friends and family this holiday season.  Our best wishes to all from Robert and Carolyn!
